Artist Biography
A visual artist working primarily with Photography in the United Kingdom, Iain was an early adopter of digital photography. His work brings natural and digital elements together, exploring themes of boundaries in nature and the imagined place.
Following a foundation in Fine Art Iain moved to Cornwall to study Photography at Falmouth University which gave the chance to develop his Photography, first diving in to a new world of underwater Photography, exploring the shipwreck scattered Cornish Coastline and The Red Sea.
A final year project Iain culminated in a unique photographic computer game bringing together elements of photography, stop motion animation, machinima and point and click adventure games. Inspired by Tarkovsky’s classic film Stalker, players were able to interact with elements of a layered landscape and unfold the narrative in an imaginary landscape.
A role as Digital Coordinator at Surface Gallery in Nottingham created the opportunity to develop Graphic Design skills; creating flyers, posters and artist catalogues. There was also the chance to curate exhibitions including an international short film exhibition Surface Shorts.
In 2009 Iain was featured on the BBC news where he was interviewed about Photographic practice, giving tips on autumnal photography.
A one month trip around China in 2008 created a large body of travel photography. Asia called again three years later with a move to South Korea to teach English in Seoul for a year. As well as English lessons this also gave a chance to teach theory and practical classes on photography and build his travel portfolio in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Experimentation is important to Iain’s practice; infrared, laser pens, flatbed scanners and fire are all used to shape a unique interdisciplinary style. His practice is also led by interests natural sciences and the Victorian obsession with collecting and categorising the world.
